Foam Crown Molding
From Dan the Molding Man
Almost everyone I've met over many years in the building industry loves the look of crown molding and what it adds to the finish of a home. Crown moldings are perhaps one of the most desired architectural trim details for both interior and exterior application and define the architectural theme of a home or commercial building. Traditionally, crown moldings have been produced in wood materials for many years but are limited to shape, size and style. With new age technology, crown moldings (or faux foam crown molding) may now be produced in two types of foam materials that broaden the selection of available styles, sizes, and finishes immensely. Both rigid molded polyurethane foam and extruded cement coated styro-foam products are a great choice for producing crown moldings for both exterior and interior applications. They will not absorb moisture or decay from dry rot or insect infestation, and offers a more fire resistant foam crown molding option. With endless choices in style, size, and finishes to select from, builders and homeowners can create a beautiful roofline detail with either of our product lines.
APR Express proudly offers two types of foam materials that offer specific benefits respectively and may be applied to accomplish a certain architectural theme, let's look at them.
- Polyurethane Foam Crown Molding: A high density rigid foam material that is made by injecting a liquid resin material into a mold to cast a specific molding style. This material is comparable to the density of pine wood and has a smooth precision milled surface. Pre-primed polyurethane moldings are an excellent choice for exterior application due to its inherent ability to withstand extreme weather conditions where wood products may absorb moisture and fail. Molded polyurethane crown molding ranges in many different style and sizes and is very light weight and installed with carpentry skills.
- Cement Coated Styro-foam (EPS) Crown Molding: This type of crown molding is produced much differently than polyurethane crown molding in that it doesn’t require a mold and can be produced for less money depending on the style, size, and grade required. Cement coated styro-foam crown moldings are produced by cutting a specific foam shape out of a block of material and covering it with nylon mesh prior to extruding a thin coat of high grade cement material over the shape to create a finished molding. These types of products are extremely light weight and normally produced for larger size requirements and utilized for commercial buildings and higher end residential applications.
APR Express proudly offers coated styro-foam in 3 grades ranging from economy series to paint grade smooth coat and also a simulated precision cast stone series. Unlike polyurethane foam crown molding which requires carpentry skills and tools for installation, styro-foam products are applied with masonry techniques and tools including a special thin set mortar as a bonding compound to stucco or concrete sub-straights.
Builders and home owners may select from standard catalog shapes or submit a custom desired shape for their projects. APR Express is proud to offer a complete line of foam crown moldings for stucco over finish or a smooth paint ready surface, as well as foam crown molding reviews and tips on how to cut foam crown molding.
Thank you for your interest and consideration, we look forward to serving you.
Sincerely,
